CROSS-CULTURAL RESEARCH
Pioneering cross-cultural IWO psychology research on Black women’s experiences across the global music ecosystem.
Our Approach
BWMG conducts original research at the intersection of cross-cultural Industrial, Work, and Organizational (IWO) psychology and the global music industry. The institute’s work is the first of its kind in the psychological sciences, examining the structural conditions, workplace dynamics, and career trajectories of Black women across the full occupational spectrum of music in major and emerging global markets.
β
The institute employs rigorous qualitative and mixed-method research designs to produce insights that are both scientifically robust and practically actionable for organizations, policymakers, educators, and the scholarly community. Its research spans diverse cultural, geographic, and economic contexts, with continued expansion into new territories and sectors.
Research Focus Areas
BWMG's research program examines Black women's experiences across the occupational and leadership spectrum of the global music industry and its adjacent sectors, with particular depth in the following areas:
Workplace Dynamics
and Organizational Culture
How power relations, organizational norms, and workplace cultures shape Black women’s professional experiences across music and music-adjacent settings.
Occupational Health
and Well-Being
The psychological and physical implications of structural inequity, high-pressure work environments, and harmful workplace conditions across the music ecosystem.
Career Trajectories
and Progression
The structural and interpersonal dynamics that influence the pace, quality, and direction of Black women’s careers across sectors within the broader music ecosystem.
Cross-Cultural and
Diaspora Perspectives
How Black women’s professional experiences converge and diverge across national, cultural, and industry contexts.
Leadership and
Executive Experiences
The distinct realities, expectations, and navigations shaping Black women’s experiences in senior and executive roles across music and music-adjacent organizations.
Historical and Contemporary Erasure and Preservation
How Black women’s contributions to the music industry are overlooked, misattributed, or excluded across historical and contemporary contexts, and the documentation, preservation, and corrective efforts required to safeguard the record.
Foundational Study
BWMG’s foundational investigation is a cross-cultural doctoral study conducted across the United States and the United Kingdom, two major music markets with significant populations of professional Black women. The research examined how trailblazing and leading Black women navigate power, identity, and structural conditions across more than fifteen business sectors of the music industry ecosystem.

Research in Development
BWMG is actively expanding its research program across new populations, territories, and sectors. Priority areas include underexamined music markets beyond dominant Western research contexts. Additional investigations across the African continent and the broader African Diaspora are in development.
Research Partnerships
BWMG welcomes partnerships with universities, research centers, industry bodies, cultural institutions, and foundations interested in collaborating on investigations, commissioning studies, or contributing to the global evidence base.
