ABOUT BWMG

A Research-Led Institution for an Industry Overdue for Deeper Understanding

Black women have shaped the sound, direction, and cultural force of music worldwide — while too often navigating inequitable conditions, structural barriers, and systematic under-recognition behind the scenes. BWMG exists to investigate those realities with scholarly rigor and to translate insight into evidence that the industry can act on.

Founded in 2017, BWMG is the first institution of its kind — applying cross-cultural IWO psychology to the study of Black women’s experiences across the global music industry. The institute operates at the intersection of psychological science, cultural memory, and institutional transformation. Its work spans original research, industry-wide education and convening, strategic advisory, and public-facing cultural initiatives — each designed to strengthen how Black women in music are understood, supported, and remembered.
